Behold the King of music, circa 2010. We aren’t talking about Elvis here. Apple’s iPod still reigns supreme. And judging from the impressive new crop of iPods announced this week along with an update to iTunes, Apple ’s dominance of the digital music world seems solid — at least for now.

NEW YORK (AP) — Shares of some top computer companies were up at the close of trading: Apple Inc. rose $6.60 or 2.6 percent, to $258.77. Dell Inc. rose $.23 or 1.9 percent, to $12.59. Hewlett Packard rose $.66 or 1.7 percent, to $40.34. IBM rose $2.54 or 2.0 percent, to $127.58. Lexmark rose $.55 or 1.5 percent, to $37.77.

SAN FRANCISCO — Apple Inc. announced a smaller, cheaper version of its Apple TV device for streaming movies and television shows over the Internet and into the living room. It also unveiled a new line of iPods, including a touch-screen Nano model.

Apple TV: What you need to know

Apple executives have frequently called the Apple TV a “hobby”—as much an acknowledgment of customers’ lackluster reaction to the set-top box as it is the amount of attention the company has devoted to the oft-overlooked product. But after Wednesday’s music-centric press event, Apple has begun to show signs of taking this particular hobby a little more seriously.

Apple appears to be the only company immune from a falloff in notebook shipments for the month of July, according to a report from Digitimes Research senior analyst Joanne Chien.
